UML to review its position on forms of govt

JUL 23 - The ruling CPN-UML has said that it would review the provisions on the first draft of the constitution, mainly on forms of government, after an overwhelming number of people suggested adopting directly elected prime minister, contrary to the provision of a parliament-elected one proposed in the first draft of the constitution.
“We must review our position on the provision in line with the demand of the public, ” UML Secretary Gokarna Bista said on Wednesday.
The UML youth leaders are already piling pressure on the party leadership to call a meeting within this week to review the party’s positions on the key issues of constitution based on the suggestions of the people. “The suggestions raised by the people are genuine and we cannot move ahead without addressing them in the constitution,” Bista said.
Initially, the UML had advocated for a directly elected prime minister as head of the government, but the party had later agreed to go for a parliament-elected prime minister and a ceremonial president as proposed by the Nepali Congress.
On Tuesday, UML Standing Committee member Shankar Pokharel and Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai had also submitted letters to CA Chairman Subas Nembang calling for the provision of directly-elected prime minister in the new constitution.
“After more than 80 percent of people chose directly elected prime minister as chief executive we should not take a contrary stance on the matter. And Congress should also agree to change its position and respect the people’s aspiration,” Bhattarai said.
